The Rule of Twelfths
The Rule of Twelfths": a set of experiments made during Summer Camp at Eastside Projects, Birmingham, 27 August - 6 September 2019, where I worked alongside Alex Billingham, Chantelle Boyle, Betsy Bradley, Matt Gale, Dinosaur Kilby, Elvin Sanders and Samiir Saunders.
My residency investigated how to make work about the sea in a landlocked city. I took 28 litres of sea water with me and lots of coastal materials, making immersed pieces on permatrace at times corresponding to low and high tide times in Sandwich Bay, with other pieces made during slack tide periods. I made my own scale of sea water to submerge the materials in which corresponded to the rule of twelfths, the system for estimating intermediate tidal heights.
